Matthew Herman

Manager, Buro Happold

Having worked in the aerospace and building industries, Matthew Herman brings a unique perspective regarding Research and Development. Since joining Buro Happold in 2003 he has worked on a wide variety of innovative projects around the world addressing energy efficiency, building physics, and environmental design. As a collaborator with Hoberman Associates he has been involved in the development of various adaptive technologies through the Adaptive Building Initiative (ABI) joint venture. Mr. Herman’s specialty is environmental modeling and digital prototyping of building systems to study the impact of design solutions within the research and development process. Currently he is the manager of Buro Happold’s Chicago office and a board member of the Adaptive Building Initiative. Mr. Herman has lectured at various conferences and universities and has been a faculty member at Pratt Institute, Stevens Institute and the Illinois Institute of Technology teaching environmental systems and research. He has contributed to recent publications on the role of the façade as an active mediator between the internal and external environment. He received a Bachelors of Architecture from Syracuse University and a Masters from the University of Pennsylvania.
